TEMPLE OF APOLLO

The Temple of Apollo, designed by Henry Flitcroft in the 18th century, is one of a number of follies set around the large serpentine lake at Stourhead Gardens.

The recent programme of repair and restoration is the latest in which Caroe & Partners have been involved to help the National Trust to conserve and repair buildings in the gardens.

We have replaced the failing 20th century zinc covered roof, which had allowed the wall heads and interior to become saturated, with a new lead covered dome constructed using estate-grown timber.

Inside, the moulded plaster ceiling with mask of Apollo (the Sun God) and gilded sunburst rays was recreated on the in-situ cornice and the interior redecorated.

Alongside the restoration work we were able to undertake a programme of sensitive conservation and repair of the high level stone and lead work.
