ST MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS

Under the lead of Eric Perry Architects, Caroe & Partners acted as the Conservation Architects for the redevelopment project at St Martin-in-the-Fields.  We were responsible for the conservation and repair to the existing fabric to this iconic 1726 Grade I listed church by James Gibb in Trafalgar Square.  Work included the cleaning and conservation of the Portland stonework following the removal of rusting iron cramps, renewing the lead coverings to the roof, tower platform and cornices, replacing the 1950s coloured glass to the church windows with clear hand blown Georgian glass and stonework repairs to west portico steps.

Within our remit we also worked with Eric Perry Architects on the conservation, repair and redecoration of the church interior.  In order to inform the process, architectural paint research was undertaken by a paint conservator and samples taken from the church’s 21 paint schemes.  All timberwork to the pews and galleries was overhauled and movable choir stalls introduced which allow the space in front of the altar to be used for the lunch time and evening concerts for which St Martin’s is renowned.

As consultants experienced in working with churches we assisted Eric Perry Architects through the often complex DAC approval and faculty processes.  The new decorative scheme is based upon the original paint scheme, which together with the clear handmade glass inserted into the windows, gives the church a light and welcoming ambience.
