Newport Transporter Bridge

Newport Transporter Bridge, or aerial ferry, was designed by Ferdinand Arnodin and is one of only six such bridges in the world. It is grade I listed and in full working order though very much less used since the new road bridge was opened in 2005. The bridge comprises a moving platform or gondola which ferries vehicles over the River Usk suspended from an overhead railway track all supported up by iron lattice towers and suspension cables.

A major programme of repairs was carried out in the early 1990's and we were commissioned to carry out a survey of condition of the Motor House and the Gondola with recommendations for repair with costings. These repairs will use traditional techniques and missing joinery will be replaced based upon close study of archive photographs.
