Castle Gatehouse at Bath Spa University is a Scheduled Ancient Monument owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. It is a surviving fragment of a 15th century fortified manor house, though much altered with a new facade of 1800 and impractical 19th century roof comprising many inner slopes.
The gatehouse had been semi -derelict for many years and because of the roof structure, with chest-height clearance in the top chamber, a beneficial use was difficult to find.
As part of a comprehensive scheme for repair of the fabric including extensive masonry conservation we proposed a scheme of alteration that has created valuable teaching space thus ensuring the building can be maintained for the future.
A new roof structure allows usable space in the large upper chamber to supplement the two smaller rooms and a modern oak stair provides safe access whilst respecting the character and significance of the original building.
