The courtyard of the British Museum had been hidden from public view since 1857 when the museum was completed. Originally an open garden the space was soon filled with first the Reading Room and then a host of bookstacks. The opening of the new British Library allowed the area to be developed to create much needed improvements to public access for the museum.

Caroe & Partners were consultants with Foster & Partners for the cleaning and conservation of the Great Court facades and advised on new stonework.  We specified the work and consulted with the masons on site to ensure the stonework cleaning and repairs were successfully completed.

We have worked directly for the Museum on a feasibility study on disabled access and on alterations to galleries to improve access and facilities for the disabled.
