St Mary, Radnage

This is an important Grade I listed 13th Century Church with some fine medieval wall paintings.  We have just completed an extensive repair programme and constructed a new extension to the North to provide an accessible toilet, meeting room with storage and kitchen facility. This was achieved by using sustainable building materials married with traditional construction methods.

The new adjoining building is designed to have a similar lifespan to the church. It is therefore made of the same local materials: brick, stone and flint, all bedded in soft lime mortar.

Internally, the timber boarding, truss and rafters have been left exposed. The Douglas fir adds warmth to the new volume created. The oak doors and windows together with the feature timber wall have been meticulously detailed by the architect and crafted by skilled joiners. The new extension does differ from the church in one respect, in that it is highly insulated and is therefore very energy efficient. The design, therefore, combines the best attributes of the ancient building with the best of modern technology.
