Gurney Manor at Cannington near Bridgwater is a fine 13th century - 15th century house enclosing a small courtyard.
We were invited in 1984 to undertake the restoration of the Manor by the Landmark Trust, a project which was to occupy ten years of careful conservation and archeological and historical analysis by a small, directly-employed team of carpenters and masons.
The building was carefully 'unpicked' exposing a treasure trove of medieval plaster, the remains of the plank and muntin screens and evidence of an early cruck roof in the 14th century hall and fine arch braced roofs in the 15th century extensions. The quality of the medieval work uncovered is outstanding.
To create a single 'Landmark' to sleep nine, we have fitted bathrooms and kitchen in to the historic fabric with minimum intervention. Medieval plaster, masonry and render and the fine moulded roof of the Great Chamber and Kitchen were carefully repaired and conserved without loss of the original.
